The Windsurfing
Besides Hawaii, Barbados is one of the best wavesailing spots in the world. The chances of wind are high and the waves are perfect for jumping and waveriding. Enjoy the side-shore winds in dream conditions on the south coast, on this most easterly situated Caribbean island.
The best time to go is the period of time when the cooling trade winds blow with high consistency over the island’s shores, namely from mid November to the end of June. But that does not mean the rest of the year couldn’t be as good as, or even better.
During the hurricane season, which starts 1st June all the way through to November, all sorts of conditions are possible.
Mostly used sails are 5.0 – 5.5 m followed by a sail size around 4.7 m and sometimes as small as 4.0m!
While basic windsurfing facilties are available at hotel beaches across the entire island, There are two main windsurfing spots that provide stronger winds and waves:
Silver Rock – Located next to Silver Sands, this is the main windsurfing spot with a white sand beach, cross shore winds with chop on the inside for the first 200 metres, followed by an amazing reef break that can produce some world class left handers.
Long Beach – As the name suggests, this is a long, crowd free beach located further upwind of Silver Rock Beach. With waves that are more mellow, this makes it a better choice for your first wave rides. This beach is quite undeveloped, with no lifeguards or rescue service, so it’s best not to windsurf alone here!
Barbados is made up of a huge collection of beaches that are hidden away, so exploration is part of the fun of visiting this island. Therefore, we always recommend hiring a car for your stay to make the most of this beautiful island.
