The Kitesurfing
The Kitesurfing
The small town of Corralejo, based in the north of Fuerteventura, is the most central location to base yourself for an excellent week of wild kitesurfing. The north coast of Fuerteventura boasts some phenomenal wave spots for advanced kitesurfers and dedicated surfers, as well as the odd secret bay with calmer conditions ideal for learning.
Flag Beach, the most popular kitesurfing spot, is the nearest to Corralejo and a 15 minute drive from the centre. It is a very long and wide beach that is best at high tide and when the wind is north easterly. You do need to be aware that at low to mid tide there are gnarly rocks and coral is exposed.
El Cotillo, a 25 minute drive from Corralejo, is a large sandy bay with a more northerly wind direction that is best surfed at low tide. This is a great spot.
Sotavento is the opposite end of the island and can be reached in about 1.5 hours from Corralejo. Sotavento is the most consistently windy beach that, uniquely, has a lagoon that fills up at high tide. The wind is cross off-shore and can therefore be gusty, but there is full centre support for rescue. The beach is a wonderful golden colour and a mile long – you’ve got lots of space!
The northerly and north easterly winds hitting the shore of Fuerteventura pass over Lanzarote first which disrupts the wind strength, to the extent that on some days when there is no wind on Flag Beach, El Cotillo has perfect conditions – local knowledge rules!
