The Kitesurfing

The Kitesurfing

Abu Soma (not to be confused with Soma Bay), is on the west flank of Kriasi Bay and has a cross-shore to cross-onshore, north easterly, wind direction.
The Palm Royale resort looks out over a massive expanse of water, with Soma Bay visible in the distance.

There are two options in Abu Soma with regards to kiting and windsurfing. The most established centre, just to the north of the hotel offers a massive range of wind and kitesurf equipment, along with the full service package including air compressors, staff on the beach to launch and land your kites as well as spacious chill out areas to hide from the sun in between sessions.

The second option is to board the ‘kite boat’ – a large motor yacht based at the Palm Royale resort and spend the day searching out uncrowded flat water paradise in the northern reaches of the bay, as well as occasional excursions further afield. This is obviously a boon for freeriders who want to enjoy kiting with zero traffic on the most perfect conditions you could imagine.

At high tide, the sand bar that runs pretty much the entire length of the bay, is covered in about 2 feet of water and is as flat as you will get with this wind direction, making it an great ‘learn to kitesurf’ zone. At low tide you are still able to kitesurf as a short walk takes you to the edge of the sand bar where the water is always deep enough for kiting and windsurfing.

This is a great watersports venue which is perfect whether you are learning, improving or going for that first handle-pass! Comfortable accommodation at the Palm Royale Resort, great kitesurfing and windsurfing with a choice of other water sports in one of windiest resorts in Egypt make for a fabulous holiday!

Centre, Courses & Kit

The Centre

In Abu Soma there is a choice of two kitesurfing centres, both of which are about 5 minutes walk from the main swimming pool of the Palm Royale Resort. The land based centre has rescue services, a dedicated storage area, compressor and beach assistants to launch and land your kites.

The second, boat based centre is an excellent option for freeriders who crave deserted, perfectly flat water and smooth winds. Jump on the boat in the morning, and head up into the upper reaches of the bay, or even further afield where you can enjoy some of the very best kiting conditions in the world!

There is a team of professional English-speaking instructors to teach you how to kitesurf, or advance your current skills. Instructors teach to VWDS standards with no more than 2 students in a group. All equipment is provided for the duration of the course.
