The Kitesurfing

The Kitesurfing

There are two kitesurfing areas in Dahab, both of which are separate to the windsurfing area. The lagoon is situated to the north of the resort, and is where beginners start with trainer kites and progress up to their first few attempts of getting going on the board. It’s a perfect, reassuring area in which to learn the basics because of the shallow water, sandy bottom and excellent instruction from our partner kite school.

The main kiting area is situated to the south of the main windsurfing area, directly in front of the excellent Bay View Hotel. As kiting and windsurfing are kept apart in Dahab, there is a huge amount of space to play in and it’s an ideal place to work on your technique without having to worry too much about traffic!

The kiting directly in front of the centre at the Bay View hotel is largely on flat water with a little bit of wind-blown chop. The spot is sheltered from the bigger swells by the sand spit at the northern end of the bay but as you venture further out, you reach the rolling swells of the Gulf of Aqaba that peak into fun waves that are great fun for riding.

Although the two kite spots are a distance apart, the centre owners lay on a boat trip twice a day to shuttle guests between the locations – alternatively, you can hop in a taxi which will cost approximately £3 each way.

The Kite Centre also arranges occasional downwinders, setting off from the upwind end of the bay early in the morning before it gets busy with windsurfers, and heading all the way down to the kite centre at the Bay View hotel, 4kms away. This can take as little or as much time as you like, and means you can get out to enjoy areas where you would normally out of bounds to kiters!

Centre, Courses & Kit

The Centre

The kitesurfing centre in Dahab is ideally located directly in front of the lagoon. Harry and his team of English-speaking instructors run a full IKO learn to kitesurf programme and have 2010 Cabrinha kites and boards available for rent.

What we like is that Harry has 4 centres dotted around the bay that offer both kitesurfing and windsurfing at the best locations.  He runs advanced coaching sessions, down winders and a special ‘Bedouin Kite trip’ with kitesurfing at a very excellent secret spot.
