The Windsurfing

The Windsurfing

As a windsurfing resort Dahab shouldn’t need much introduction and has something for all levels of windsurfer. With consistent winds, warm water and three distinct sailing areas, each with their own unique set of conditions,  it’s one of the original windsurfing holiday destinations.

The eastern end of the lagoon is protected by a sand spit and has warm shallow water and easy launching, making it perfect for beginners. Intermediates can blast back and forth across the bay perfecting their foot strap and harness technique before cranking into a carve gybe. Many people accomplish their first fully planing gybe in Dahab, the conditions really are that good for progressing!

Head out beyond the hook shaped bay for timed runs on the super flat ‘Speedy’ or further along to ‘Baby Bay’ to catch your breath and make the most of the flat shallow water that’s just perfect for freestyle. Baby bay is worth a visit even as a spectator – Dahab is currently home to the two best freestylers in Egypt – what they can do is awesome!

For the more advanced sailor, get a group together and head beyond Baby Bay and through Napoleon Reef to the Gulf of Aqaba itself and its big rolling swell for another sailing experience you won’t find elsewhere.

Our partner centre offers a very effective safety system.  All freeriders are given a waterproof radio to take with them on the water – if you’re unlucky enough to experience some equipment failure and can’t get back to the beach,  simply call up the centre and they will come and get you – a great service, meaning peace of mind all day on the water!

Centre, Courses & Kit

The Centre

There are a choice of 6 centres along the sandy beach, located at or near each of the hotels, so no matter where you stay you can have windsurfing available from the beach in front of your hotel.

Beginners are better suited to the conditions in the bay with its gently shelving sandy sea bed, so the centres at the Hilton, The Swiss Inn or lagoon end would be the most convenient. Intermediate sailors who can water-start would be best suited to the centres at Le Meridien or the Bay View Hotel – from here the deeper water and a cross shore wind means you can blast out on one tack to ‘Speedy’, a flat water paradise and ‘Baby Bay’ for freestyle. Anything is possible in Dahab, stay at one centre and sail at another, we are happy to advise on which centre will suit your holiday requirements the best.
