The Kitesurfing
The Kitesurfing
Soma Bay is the opposite side of Abu Soma and is one of our favourite kitesurfing beaches in Egypt. The spot is just amazing as it has a huge sand bar that at high tide is covered in knee to waist deep water and runs all the way to the top of the bay, giving a good 1km of un-crowded kitesurfing.
Soma bay is an ideal place for intermediate & advanced kitesurfers who can try out new tricks on the flat water, with the added confidence of the safety back up the centre provides. The conditions are calm and not very busy, so you’ll have plenty of space to get those jumps dialled. Particular to Soma Bay, the wind is naturally accelerated by the mountain ridge that heads north towards Hurghada, so when Hurghada or El Gouna has lighter winds Soma bay can be a good 5 knots more. It is worth noting that the winds are mainly cross off here, so not ideal for beginners although there is,of course, rescue services offered by the centre.
From the front of the centre, a few tacks upwind takes you to the very top of the bay where the wind is off shore giving you butter flat water – a freestyler’s heaven. For downwinder aficionados, the centre can arrange a blast down to Tobias Island a few kilometeres away. Play at this paradise spot ’til you are spent then boat support will take you back to base with lunch and drinks included.
