The Kitesurfing
The Kitesurfing
Galu’s wide uncrowded beach, warm turquoise waters and cross-shore winds make it a fantastic kitesurfing holiday destination. For beginners, the flat shallow water inside the reef means there is plenty of space for perfecting kite control and body dragging, culminating in those first boardstarts whilst the reef (located about half a mile out to sea) kicks up a lovely 3-4 foot wave, especially in the Kuzi wind season. Galu beach really does cater for all levels and disciplines of kitesurfing.
The Kaskazi winds provide reliable conditions from December through to the start of May when it blows 10 – 14 knots in the morning, perfect for beginners, and up to 16-22 knots of side-shore warm trade wind in the afternoon. The only limitation will be your stamina!
The Kuzi wind season of June - September blows a stronger southerly wind, and brings with it swells that produce a bigger wave than in the Kaskazi season. During this time of year although the weather is cooler (24 – 28°C), it’s hardly cold and the strong winds make this an excellent time to kitesurf.
In addition to kitesurfing, the reef is a great surfing wave early in the morning before the wind gets up – Ideal for SUP and paddle surfing. At low tide the beach is perfect for land yachting and land boarding.
