The town of Essaouira is located right on the Atlantic coast, a 2 hour drive from Marrakech. With its laid-back way of life, fantastic sandy beaches and consistent, strong winds it has long been a favourite destination for travellers, windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Essaouira has enviable weather statistics and depending on the time of year, and where you are on the beach, there is both protected water and waves. If the 5 km long beach doesn’t offer enough, trips can be organised to the nearby wave spots of Moulay Bouzerktoun and Sidi Kaouki, just 25km away with their own well equipped centres.

The Medina’s attractive white-washed buildings with their colourful shutters are set within the old city walls and entered through four main ‘Babs` or gateways. These buildings make up a maze of narrow cobbled lanes with market stalls selling spices, rugs, leather and jewellery. Don’t worry, should you need an energy boost there are also plenty of coffee and cake shops!!

Check out the cafe & restaurant-lined squares such as  Place Chrib Attai with Chez Mermot or  El Khaima (The Tent) on account of the large Moroccan tented restaurant. Enjoy a healthy bowl of couscous or a traditional tagine and watch the world go by with a glass of sweet mint tea and discover the flavours of Morocco.

Further hidden away are the cloistered, fish and vegetable souks which retain their original function & sell wonderful fresh local produce.  Pop down there at dinner time, mix with the locals and savour some freshly grilled fish or prawns of your choice cooked for you in the market kitchen – its great value and extremely delicious.
