The Kitesurfing
The Kitesurfing
The kitesurfing in Essaouira is a ‘lip smacking’ adventure with dusty trails leading to awesome beaches with so many wave spots to ride and conquer – just superb!
For intermediate riders Essaouira is a really good kitesurfing holiday choice as it will challenge your abilities and accelerate your skills dramatically. For the advanced rider Morocco is our favourite short-haul waveriding destination that will push your skills to the limit. Whether kitesurfing from the main bay or heading out to explore the surrounding beaches on a mini-adventure you will find conditions varying from calm seas to world class waves.
Winter winds tend to be 18 - 24 knots and sometimes from the south which encourages a slightly warmer sea, while the summer winds are from the north and stronger, so 20 - 30 knots on most days.
Essaouira Bay - this is best kitesurfed from the far end where the wind is more constant. Early morning rides have lighter winds and calmer sea. In the afternoon the wind strength increases and the bigger waves arrive. The conditions here are very similar to Gwithian in Cornwall which has a small shore break with shallow sea for 30 - 40 yards, after which you can expect anything from 2 - 6 ft waves.
Moulay Bouzerktoun – this is a 20 kms trip north of Essaouira and a superb wave spot. The beach is more exposed to the north-easterly winds so has stronger, cleaner winds and can deliver 2 - 3 m waves. It is best suited to advanced riders only, but is definitely a spot to ride.
Sidi Kaouki – is a beautiful beach 20 kms south of Essaouira and again offers superb waveriding and is ideally located for the side-shore north easterly winds.
