The Kitesurfing

Situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Algarve enjoys steady winds from the south west; generally lighter in the mornings, and as the day heats up, the thermal effect starts to kick in. The wind typically reaches 20-25 knots before easing off again in the early evening.

The water conditions on this stretch of coast have the most varied conditions out of any spot we feature worldwide. In a single day you can score perfect peeling waves, beach breaks, small waves that are perfect as kickers and finally, some of the best quality flat, shallow water you’ll ever kite on! The Algarve coast is literally teeming with spots that are perfect for every level of kitesurfer. Below is a taste of the spots on offer, but rest assured, there are a lot more than we can write about on the website!

Rio Formosa: A nature reserve just to the east of Faro Airport, endless sand dunes, lagoons of waist deep water on the inside, fun little waves on the outside. The area is home to several species of Atlantic fish, hence the protected status. Take a picnic and get away from it all for the day!

Rio de Alvor: A lagoon situated at the river mouth of the fishing village of Alvor. At low to mid tide it’s shallow enough to stand up in while still allowing unobstructed winds in to make the most of a fantastic freestyle spot. Beginners will also love the safe, forgiving conditions.
