Tarifa is situated at the southern most point of the European mainland separating the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. For kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts it is simply a dream location as it is has a string of huge sandy beaches that are swept by consistent winds 300 days of the year!

There are two parts to the town; the historical part is an ancient walled town with a labyrinth of narrow streets, a fishing harbour, white washed houses, small squares with orange trees and rich architecture including a striking castle with stunning views across the sea to Africa.

Here is a place where you will find great restaurants and bars, both traditional and European with bags of character, combining Spanish, European and Moorish flavours. Outside of the walled city are more modern buildings and accommodation with a great selection of trendy shops, restaurants and bars. The whole town is surrounded by open countryside, affording huge views across the Straits of Gibraltar to the mountains of North Africa.

You really start to notice why Tarifa is such a big draw for kiters and windsurfers on the descent into the bay once you’ve driven over the hill from Algeciras – hundreds of wind turbines dot the ridges around the town, and they are there for a reason – this is a seriously windy place and somewhere you should definitely be packing your smallest sails and kites for!

While you can reach everything by foot in the town, a car is needed to get around as the windsurfing and kitesurfing centres are a few kilometres outside of town. Also, having a car gives you that much more freedom to venture further afield to explore this beautiful region.
