Maui – The Valley Isle
Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, known for its breathtaking white sand beaches, superb inland scenery, and general air of quiet sophistication and where the pace of life is decidedly slow. Maui is the centre of the windsurfing and kitesurfing world and home to the industry innovators. It has some of the most reliable winds on the planet, and warm water all year round.
As well as fabulous windsurfing and kitesurfing the island offers diverse opportunities for hiking, whale watching, snorkelling and surfing. A must to travel is the road to Hana which is a kaleidoscope of fragrant flowers, lush jungle vegetation, waterfalls and impressive cliffs, while its dormant volcano, Haleakala, presides over everything.
Remember that a car is definitely required to get around the island and understand that the Hawaiian culture is very chilled and relaxed, just like their driving so leave yourself plenty of time if you need to get somewhere!
Maui’s beautiful ocean front resorts are spread over four distinct areas each offering something special, and catering to all budgets.
Paia – A trendy cool town on the north shore where many of the ‘cool surfers’ hang out. There is a nice choice of shops for the unusual and exotic while the bars offer a place to relax and meet the locals.
Kapalua – Set near the North West tip of the island, it has a series of lava peninsulas, sheltering quiet sandy coves. It is also home to one of the most famous golf courses in North America, Kapalua Plantation, where the opening of the PGA starts and when the best in the world come to challenge the course.
Wailea – With charm and serenity Wailea is simply stunning, a great resort area with fantastic ocean front hotels, a shopping centre with arts and crafts stores, upscale restaurants and the famous Four Seasons bar.
Kaanapali – The largest resort area of Maui with wide sweeping beaches, golf courses and several great ocean front hotels. There is a great mix of shops, restaurants, bars and activities, an ideal place to be at the heart of it all.
Kihei – A very relaxed and casual resort with good shops, galleries and a lively nightlife.
