About Windsurfing

Windsurfing has had people hooked for years – the exhilarating sensation of speed once the hull of the board starts planing across water is hard to beat and the immense skill involved in pulling off jumps and tricks is inspiring!

Windsurfing equipment has improved radically over the years and new innovations have now made it possible to get sailing in a few hours and proficient in 10 hrs, depending on conditions.  Before you know it you will be using the harness and ft straps and planing; from thereon in you’ll  be hooked!

The progression to short boards from here is straight forward – with good instruction you will soon have water-starting dialled and be using the the sail to lift you out of the water onto the board. After this you can try your hand at wave sailing, jumping, freestyle, slalom or why not progress in all disciplines?

How it works

How it works

Windsurfing is best learned on a beginner windsurfing course done as part of holiday to somewhere warm and windy!

Courses generally include 10 hours of tuition, taught over 3-4 days, depending on the location and the conditions. This works well as it allows you time to rest between teaching sessions and relax or try other activities, or explore your destination.

Courses are normally taught in small groups of up to 6 people, each of you with your own kit, though this depends on the centre.  We have handpicked the centres that we work with for their location, their facilities and their standards of tuition and safety.  You will always find the centre a pleasant place to chill out and have a beer with other windsurfers.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I take a windsurfing lesson?
It’s the quickest way to learn! Sure you can self teach but taking proper lessons reduces the learning curve significantly thus ensuring you get the most out of the sport. A large part of windsurfing isn’t endurance or strength, but technique – you don’t need arms like a spinach loving cartoon character to progress quickly, just a good instructor and an open mind.

What should I bring to a lesson?
The only thing you need to bring with you is your willingness to learn an exciting new sport. Other than that a few things you might want with you are a swimsuit or shorts if in warmer waters, a rash vest, sunscreen, water, and inexpensive sunglasses.

Do I need to have strong arms to windsurf?
No, its all about technique so bend the knees and as you improve and there is more pressure on the sail in stronger winds, you can use a waist or seat harness which distributes the force throughout your body.

Do I have to be in great shape to windsurf?
No. Being in good shape will help but people of all shapes and sizes can enjoy the thrill of windsurfing, however being able to swim and being comfortable in the water is mandatory. Please advise your instructor if you have allergies or medical conditions.

How long will it take me to get going?
The average person can get up and go very quickly and be planing with 12 hours of professional coaching. Getting back to where you started from is easy with the right kit and tuition.

When can I go?
Now! One of the great things about windsurfing is that you can go at any time of year. Just give us a little notice and we will get you away to somewhere suitable with wind. With the popularity of windsurfing at busy times it can be prudent to book sooner rather than later as flights & hotels in top spots get booked up quickly for peak periods.

What happens after that?

Once you have got the basics, you can then take trips to a wider range of destinations, clocking up the water time & building your skills as you go. Once you are hooked, the world is your oyster! You can windsurf & kitesurf in windy destinations all over the world.

How much does it cost?
It needn’t cost the earth, we will tailor your holiday to suit your needs and ensure you get the best deal available. A typical ‘learn to windsurf’ holiday in Egypt costs from about £649 per person including flights, transfers, accommodation and ‘learn to windsurf’ course.

All of the windsurfing centres we work with have a great selection of cutting edge kit, so you don’t need to buy your own or take it with you.
